Another White House Ghoul

Yet another of Trump’s top advisors that I have largely ignored is Stephen Miller.  But in the past few days he is flying around on my radar and making me very uncomfortable, so it is time to take a closer look at Mr. Miller.

Miller’s career path has not been what I would call illustrious.  He served as communications director for former senator and current Attorney General Jeff Sessions, which certainly does nothing to raise him in my esteem.  He was also press secretary for former Representative Michele Bachmann (former Idiot of the Week and also America’s #1 Bimbo), which again, is not a feather in his cap.  And now, Mr. Miller is a “senior advisor” to Donald Trump.

millerThough raised by two liberal, Democratic parents, he became a conservative while in high school after reading a book, Guns, Crime, and Freedom, by National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre. While still in high school, he started appearing on conservative talk radio shows and writing letters to editors.  While attending Duke University, he criticized poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, accusing her of “racial paranoia”, and also established a relationship with white supremacist, anti-Semitic Richard Spencer, about whom I have written before.   A former advisor at Duke later said of Miller that he, “seemed to assume that if you were in disagreement with him, there was something malevolent or stupid about your thinking — incredibly intolerant.”  Sound familiar?

Which brings us to present day.  As ‘Senior Advisor’, Miller was not subject to confirmation by the senate, and therefore officially began his new position on January 20th.  Until late last week, Miller kept a fairly low profile, or perhaps was simply overshadowed by Trump’s immigration ban and all the controversy it entailed, as well as the contentious confirmation hearings for DeVos and Sessions, among others.  But late last week, his name started appearing more often.

When the infamous ‘immigration ban’, banning people from entering the country from seven specific, Middle-Eastern, primarily Muslim countries was first signed into law, I was fairly certain its author was none other than Steve ‘Breitbart’ Bannon.  Turns out that Stephen Miller, Jeff Sessions and Bannon all corroborated on the order.  Three bloomin’ racists putting their big heads together … imagine the possibilities.

Once the travel ban was halted by U.S. District Judge James Robart, and the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals refused to reinstate the ban, Miller adamantly defended Trump’s crude and hateful criticism of the judge.  (It should be noted that, emboldened by Trump’s very unprofessional tweets condemning Judge Robart, the judge has been a target of many threats, including one referring to Robart as “dead man walking”.  This, people, is the president we elected.)  But back to Miller … he appeared yesterday morning on the Sunday morning talk show circuit, including an interview on ABC News’ This Week with George Stephanopoulos where he told so many lies that The Washington Post wrote an entire fact-checking article  disproving nearly everything he said on the program.  Other questions he simply averted, as is the standard operating procedure for the Trump team.  Alternative facts and non-answers.  Click here  for the transcript of the entire interview. He later did another interview on CBS’ Face the Nation where he spouted more of the same.

Miller defends Trump’s verbal (Twitter) attacks on Judge Robart and the appeals court, supports and falsely claims knowledge of Trump’s assertion of massive voter fraud, and of the travel ban says that “all options are on the table”.  Despite, or perhaps because of his lies and evasions, Trump was proud of his boy Stephen, tweeting, “Congratulations Stephen Miller- on representing me this morning on the various Sunday morning shows. Great job!” just minutes after the segment aired.

CNN considers that Miller may be the most powerful player in the White House, and I think that, in conjunction with Steve Bannon, that may well be true.  Certainly he is, with his racist views and links to white supremacists, one of the most frightening.  Glenn Thrush of the New York Times said, “The (Steve) Bannon cluster in the White House is moving full speed ahead in part because they don’t feel like they have a lot of time, and I think if you look at the backlash against the travel ban, they may not have that much time.”

The most immediately concerning thing to me is that Trump, Bannon, Miller and others seem to believe that the courts have overstepped their bounds in placing constitutionality over the power of the president.  The appeals court last week asked repeatedly for some evidence that there was a real threat of danger from the seven countries listed in the ban, but the Justice Department, which was defending the administration’s position, could not provide such evidence.  If the Trump administration ultimately has their way on this issue, it may set a powerful precedent for future cases where Trump and his minions make decisions that are unconstitutional and not in the best interest of the nation.  If the court’s power is reduced and the power of the executive office increased, we will have taken the first step toward an autocracy … a step that may be nearly impossible to reverse.  Along with Steve Bannon and Jeff Sessions, Stephen Miller may complete a triumvirate that is destined to change the values of this nation.

Open Letter to Donald Trump – #3

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

06 February 2017

Dear D. Trump;

This is my third … THIRD … letter to you, and frankly I am getting tired of writing to you.  I have much more important things to do, but you are not heeding my message, thus forcing me to continue trying to help you to understand the needs of the nation you so badly wanted to represent.

Today I read yet another of your self-deluded tweets: “Any negative polls are fake news, just like the CNN, ABC, NBC polls in the election. Sorry, people want border security and extreme vetting.”  I would like to clarify and set you straight on this issue, as you are so entirely out of touch with what the people in this nation want that you should not be sitting in that chair you are sitting in.

The polls that show your approval rating at 35% – 40% are likely quite accurate.  Have you not noticed that there are protestors in every city protesting your Islamophobic ban on Muslims and the fact that you have threatened to take affordable healthcare from 20 million people?  Do you not read the people’s responses in the Op-Ed sections of the newspapers, on Facebook, in blogs, and even on your very own Twitter feed?  Do you not see when you turn on your television and there are thousands of people holding signs that read “IMPEACH TRUMP!”? What DO you think when you see these things?  How can you still believe you represent the will of We The People, when you do not even see us, let alone hear us????

Since you have proven that you have no clue what the citizens of this nation want and don’t want, I have compiled two lists for you.  Please cut these lists out and put them where you will be certain to see them on a daily, or preferably hourly basis:

What Americans DO Want:

  • Strong environmental protections including cleaner, renewable energy sources, protections for land, air, water and wildlife
  • Affordable healthcare for ALL
  • A reasonable immigration policy that affords asylum and opportunities for all refugees, regardless of national origin or religion
  • Laws that promote equality for all, including African-Americans, Hispanics, Middle-Easterners, and the LGBT community
  • Higher tax rates on large corporations and wealthy individuals such as yourself
  • Cordial and productive relations between the U.S. and our allies, such as the UK, EU, and Australia
  • A government that respects the press and the important role they play in helping us maintain our democracy
  • Sensible gun regulations that include background checks and competency testing
  • A president and a Congress that answer to the people, not to the lobbyists such as the NRA
  • Freedom of choice and options such as Planned Parenthood to assist us in making healthy, sensible choices
  • An improved educational system that includes a solid liberal arts program, and affordable college for ALL
  • A prison system that focuses on rehabilitation rather than retribution
  • Transparency in all areas of government, especially those that apply to the environment, human services, education, communication and national security

What Americans Do NOT Want:

  • Pipelines such as Keystone and Dakota Access which will cause damage to the environment
  • Additional military spending when we already have the highest annual military expenditure in the world, and there are many humanitarian issues that could benefit from that money
  • A Supreme Court that leans heavily in either direction
  • Federal lands destroyed by logging, mining and drilling
  • Laws that allow for the discrimination of any group of people for any reason
  • Increased use of fossil fuels that damage the earth and surrounding environment
  • A ‘wall’ on the U.S.-Mexico border that would hurt both our economy and that of our ally, Mexico
  • A nation that favours one religion over others
  • Steve Bannon to have ANY role in government
  • Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education, as she seeks to destroy our public schools
  • An authoritarian government where the president thinks he is a dictator

In short, Don, we do NOT support virtually any of the positions you have taken or announced your intent to take thus far.  If you truly wish to be president of this country, you will put aside your own ego, choose advisors who have the knowledge and experience you so sorely lack, and listen to the people.

While I am on that subject, let me be perfectly clear.  In light of your daily rant today, I understand you said that the media are ‘covering up’ terrorist attacks.  You know better than that, and I know better than that, and 90% of Americans know better than that, so why on earth would you tell such a monumental lie?  Let us deal with some actual facts here, instead of your post-truth, alternative facts. First, according to Representative Jerrold Nadler and verified by PolitiFact, since 9/11, 94 people have been killed in the U.S. by terrorist attacks, but not a single one was perpetrated by a terrorist from any of the seven countries on your list. 94 people in 15 years is far from the massive problem you claim it to be, and FURTHERMORE, the large majority of jihadist terrorists in the United States have been American citizens or legal residents.  Second, the media could not cover up a terrorist attack if they wanted to … and why would they want to?  It would be more coverage for them?  Use your head for something other than putting that really bad toupee on, please Don.

One last piece of advice.  Ditch Bannon, Spicer and Conway … you do a good enough job of making yourself look foolish, but with their help, you are coming across to the majority of us as a total buffoon.  If you don’t straighten up, you will have the shortest term of any president since William Henry Harrison in 1941 who died of pneumonia just 32 days after his inauguration.

I hope that you find my advice to be useful and that just for once in your life you will listen to somebody who is literate, educated, and relatively knowledgeable. Please also refresh your memory by referring back to letter #1 and letter #2.

Writing to you is getting extremely tiresome and frankly I have enough problems of my own without having to spend my time doing this.  I close with one final thought:  as I see it, you owe me approximately $28,076.45 for many nights of lost sleep, breakage of dishes, a hole in the plaster of my wall, a possibly broken toe, and the time I have to spend correcting your lies for others.  I will accept either a cashier’s check or money order.  Thank you.

Regards,

Jill E. Dennison

On Carrot Cake and Steve Bannon

Folks … we need to talk.  Yes, I know you’d like another Groundhog Day post this morning, but unfortunately Groundhog Day comes but once a year.  Okay … yes, it IS National Carrot Cake Day and also National Wear Red Day.  Carrot cake I can do … wearing red?  NO.  I do not wear red.  So, here’s my nod to National Carrot Cake Day.

carrot-cake

Now seriously … we need to talk … and think.

Today’s topic for pondering is none other than Steve Bannon.  I have been pondering a question for the past several days, and I want to walk through my thought processes for my own clarity, as well as yours.

bannon-1Yes, that’s Steve Bannon, white supremacist, ‘former’ head of Breitbart, with links to both KKK and neo-Nazi organizations. The same Steve Bannon who was named Trump’s “Senior White House Advisor” and then, just last week, was given a seat on the National Security Council, despite having absolutely no experience that qualifies him for that position.

Now … I want to pose a question to my readers … a question that keeps invading my thought processes:  what if Steve Bannon is actually the person running the government?  What if he is both the brains and the vitriol behind Trump?

bannon-2Let me explain my thinking.  Bannon had absolutely no qualifications to become a presidential advisor, yet he was the first chosen and the position Trump assigned him did not require senate confirmation. It is said that Bannon has been the framer of most, if not all, of the executive orders Trump has issued in the past two weeks, which makes sense, as we have seen Trump’s communication style and its … shall we say, ‘limitations’ (2 syllables), so to believe he crafted executive legislation is a stretch.  Then Bannon is given a full seat on the principals committee of the National Security Council, for which he is even less qualified than I am.  But the final slap-in-the-face for me was the fact that when Trump made his obnoxious call to Prime Minister Turnbull of Australia on Saturday, not only was Bannon in the room, but it is said that Trump deferred to him on at least one occasion.

Now, we all know that Trump disturbs me:  he is a narcissistic, poorly educated, unqualified, arrogant buffoon.  However, Bannon may well disturb me even more.  Let us look at some of the things he has said over the past few months:

  • August 2016 – “I’m a Leninist. Lenin wanted to destroy the state, and that’s my goal too. I want to bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today’s establishment. National Review and The Weekly Standard are both left-wing magazines, and I want to destroy them also.”
  • November 2016 – “Darkness is good. Dick Cheney. Darth Vader. Satan. That’s power. It only helps us when ‘they’ get it wrong. When ‘they’re’ blind to who we are and what we’re doing. If we deliver [the Trump Administration] we’ll get 60 percent of the white vote, and 40 percent of the black and Hispanic vote and we’ll govern for 50 years. I am Thomas Cromwell in the court of the Tudors.”
  • January 2017 – “The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while. I want you to quote this: The media here is the opposition party. They don’t understand this country. They still do not understand why Donald Trump is the president of the United States. The media has zero integrity, zero intelligence, and no hard work.”

According to Foreign Policy,  a notable, award-winning source:

“Even before he was given a formal seat on the National Security Council’s “principals committee” this weekend by President Donald Trump, Bannon was calling the shots and doing so with little to no input from the National Security Council staff, according to an intelligence official who asked not to be named out of fear of retribution.

“He is running a cabal, almost like a shadow NSC,” the official said. He described a work environment where there is little appetite for dissenting opinions, shockingly no paper trail of what’s being discussed and agreed upon at meetings, and no guidance or encouragement so far from above about how the National Security Council staff should be organized.”

I am not alone in my thinking.  Yesterday, Time magazine’s latest edition features Bannon, on the cover with text that reads “The Great Manipulator.” The headline used for the piece inside the magazine asks, “Is Steve Bannon the Second Most Powerful Man in the World?”

bannon-time-2So I have to ask the question … who is actually calling the shots?  Who is driving this Ship of Fools?  And which is worse?  Trump, an idiot extraordinaire who is as likely as not to destroy this country with his energy, environmental, educational and national security policies, as well as destroy every foreign alliance we have?  Or Bannon, a man who, while equally disgusting, is more intelligent and better educated, and thinks like Lenin … a sly and devious man whose every move has purpose?  Where does Putin and his vision of a new Soviet-style empire fit into the equation? Are we being buffeted willy nilly by a fool or are we being guided purposefully by Captain Bligh?  Why have Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn both died when we need them to help us figure this out??? Either way … my final question:  will we see a Mutiny on the Bounty?

I am not a conspiracy theorist at all … I do not believe that our government played a role in 9/11, other than perhaps the intelligence community being so disjointed that they missed what was right under their noses.  I do not think that Lyndon Johnson ordered the assassination of John F. Kennedy.  Nor am I saying that Bannon is the brains of this operation and Trumpet merely a pumpet.  However, I am asking your opinion.  I am asking you to watch and listen … that is all.

Oh alright … fine … here is a link to the Carrot Cake Recipe.  Send me a piece, please …

Then … and Now

“The receptivity of the great masses is very limited, their intelligence is small, but their power of forgetting is enormous. In consequence of these facts, all effective propaganda must be limited to a very few points and must harp on these slogans until the last member of the public understands what you want him to understand by your slogan.” – Adolph Hitler, Mein Kampf, 1926

It was on this day, 30 January in 1933 that Adolph Hitler came to power in Germany.  Eighty-four years ago today was the start of what would become an empire of evil.

Control of newspapers was put into the hands of Joseph Goebbels, the head of the Ministry of Popular Enlightenment and Propaganda. Goebbels set up a department within the ministry that dealt solely with newspapers. The newspapers had to spread the same message as everything else – Gleischaltung – the coordination of the whole of Nazi German society so that it acted and thought the same. Therefore, people could only read the news as it was presented to them by the government. (Keep in mind that this was before the age of television and the internet, so radio and newspapers were the primary venues for information)

The official newspaper of the Third Reich was the ‘Vőlkischer Beobachter’, which translated as ‘Racial Observer’. It was anti-Semite, anti-Communist, anti-liberal and completely fawning towards Hitler. In addition, Joseph Goebbels had his own newspaper, ‘Der Angriff’, translated as ‘The Assault’, which also supported Hitler and National Socialism and pushed Nazi ideas.

At its peak, Goebbels supervised more than 3,600 newspapers and hundreds of magazines. He met the editors of the Berlin newspapers each morning and told them what could be printed and what could not.

Fast forward 84 years and half a globe away:

trump-hitlerTrump, the head of the governing administration in the U.S., has selected as his chief advisor Steve Bannon, a self-professed white supremacist who, until recently, headed the right-wing, white supremacist media outlet, Breitbart. It is to be believed he still has much control over the organization, an organization that is anti-LGBT, racist, sexist, pro-Nazi, anti-immigrant, and fawns entirely over Trump.  Here is what Mr. Bannon had to say to the press last weekend:

“The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while. I want you to quote this. The media here is the opposition party. They don’t understand this country. They still do not understand why Donald Trump is the president of the United States.”

Sources inside the White House say that Bannon wrote a portion of Trump’s inaugural speech and has written most, if not all of his disastrous ‘executive orders’ In addition to Breitbart being a mouthpiece for Trump, Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, owns and publishes the New York Observer.

bannon-goebbels

Goebbels  & Bannon

In an interview last August, Bannon was quoted as saying, “I’m a Leninist. Lenin wanted to destroy the state, and that’s my goal too. I want to bring everything crashing down, and destroy all of today’s establishment.” More recently he commented on two news outlets: “National Review and The Weekly Standard are both left-wing magazines, and I want to destroy them also. No one reads them or cares what they say.”

And this: “I’m the guy pushing a trillion-dollar infrastructure plan. With negative interest rates throughout the world, it’s the greatest opportunity to rebuild everything. Ship yards, iron works, get them all jacked up. We’re just going to throw it up against the wall and see if it sticks. It will be as exciting as the 1930s … “ As exciting as the 1930s .. the 1930s when Hitler came to power and the world would never be quite the same again.

Last October, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) issued this warning: “[Donald] Trump has insulted and vilified the press and has made his opposition to the media a centerpiece of his campaign. A Trump presidency would represent a threat to press freedom in the United States.”

Throughout his campaign, Trump has vilified the press, calling them liars, disgusting, and scum.  What is more frightening, however, is that some of his supporters took this as a declaration of “open season” on journalists.  A few of the more horrific examples:

  • Julia Ioffe wrote an article for GQ Magazine that was critical of Trump’s current wife, Melania. Within days Ms. Ioffe had received a barrage of anti-Semitic mail and a number of death threats.
  • Kurt Eichenwald, noted author and writer for Newsweek who has frequently spoken of his epilepsy, received a tweet from a Trump supporter that triggered a seizure. Yes, folks that CAN happen … I had a cousin who had epilepsy and even the flashing lights on certain television programs would trigger a seizure.
  • At his rallies, his supporters were so vociferous, screaming ‘boos’ and using obscene gestures, that in several instances, journalists had to be escorted by police in riot gear.
A supporter gestures at the media as Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump addresses supporters during a campaign rally for Republican Presidential Donald Trump in Cincinnati

One of Trump’s sheeples

Yes indeed, some of Trump’s supporters are a really class act, aren’t they?  His fan base is more of a problem than just hate-mail, vitriol and death threats, however.  They lend him legitimacy in his fight against the press and others.  They feed his ego.  Trump could never do to our press what Hitler did to Germany’s, right?  I mean, we have laws, we have the Constitution, the 1st amendment.  But … if the majority in Congress support him almost without reservation, and if he nominates a like-thinking Supreme Court Justice to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Antonin Scalia …. who stops him?  The Constitution, you say.  But who interprets the Constitution?  The Supreme Court. Who enacts the laws of the land?  Congress.

Already, Trump has shown that he is intent on bypassing the system for making laws, and simply imposing his will on the country via a series of ‘executive orders’.  Already he considers that the press is his enemy, that there is a war on between himself and the press.  Already he has threatened to sue any media organization that fails to play nice with him.  Already he has used such smokescreen tactics as those I have mentioned before:  red herrings, spin, and that can o’ worms – alternative facts.  Already Bannon is considering relocating the White House press corps outside the White House, effectively limiting their informational flow.  Already the press is being spoon-fed what the administration wants it to know, with other things almost certainly taking place behind the scenes.

Many, even those who are not Trump supporters, say I am seeing monsters in the closet or jumping at shadows when I make comparisons between Hitler and Trump, Goebbels and Bannon, and the situation in Germany in the 1930s with the situation in the U.S. in 2017.  I don’t think I am, but even if I am stretching my imagination, I still see enough similarities to send a chill down my spine as I write this post.  I hope I am wrong, but even if I am, I would rather be ever-vigilant and find it was an unnecessary precaution than fail to take the precaution and find out I was right.  This is one time there would be no joy in having to say, “I told you so”.

Tony The Tiger Takes On Breitbart

tony-1I am going to stock up tomorrow on Kellogg’s cereal!  Rice Krispies, Frosted Flakes, Raisin Bran … the works!  My family rarely eats cereal, and we have a pantry of assorted cereals as it is.  I will probably end up giving it away to somebody who does eat cereal.  But I am going to buy boxes and boxes of Kellogg’s cereal!  Why, you ask?  Because I want to support companies who stand up for a certain set of humanitarian values, and that is what Kellogg’s did.

On Tuesday, the Kellogg Company pulled all their advertisements from Breitbart, saying that Breitbart was not aligned with their values.

“We regularly work with our media-buying partners to ensure our ads do not appear on sites that aren’t aligned with our values as a company,” Kris Charles, a spokeswoman for Kellogg’s, told Bloomberg. “We recently reviewed the list of sites where our ads can be placed and decided to discontinue advertising on Breitbart.com. We are working to remove our ads from that site.”

Kellogg’s is not the first, either.  Other companies have pulled ads from the site, including Allstate, Nest, EarthLink, Warby Parker, SoFi and the investment group Vanguard. Many did not realize they were advertising on Breitbart because their ad campaigns are run through automated systems which distribute ads across a large network of sites.

Breitbart was not too happy about this news, predictably.  Editor-in-Chief Alexander Marlow called for a boycott of the company’s products, saying: “For Kellogg’s, an American brand, to blacklist Breitbart News in order to placate left-wing totalitarians is a disgraceful act of cowardice.” He further claimed that the move represents “an escalation in the war by leftist companies … against conservative customers”.

Steve Bannon, former CEO of Breitbart and now Trump’s senior advisor, boasted that Breitbart is “the platform for the alt-right”, a far-right political movement with links to white supremacist organizations.  In recent months, Breitbart has published misogynist stories such as “Birth Control Makes Women Unattractive And Crazy”, and “Would You Rather Your Child Had Feminism Or Cancer?”, and anti-Muslim stories like  “Data: Young Muslims In The West Are A Ticking Time-Bomb”.  Is it any wonder that a company like Kellogg’s, that has been around since 1906 … 110 years, or 101 years longer than Breitbart, is appalled by this form of yellow journalism?  Kellogg and the other companies have a reputation to uphold, and I am pleased to see that they still retain certain values.  I hope more companies will follow suit and do the same.

AppNexus Inc., operator of one of the biggest digital advertising services, has barred Breitbart News from using its ad-serving tools because it violated its hate speech rules. The digital ad firm decided the publication had breached a policy against content that incites violence, said AppNexus spokesman Joshua Zeitz. “We did a human audit of Breitbart and determined there were enough articles and headlines that cross that line, using either coded or overt language,” he said.

Some examples of recent Breitbart headlines:

  • The solution to online ‘harassment’ is simple: Women should log off
  • Bill Kristol: Republican spoiler, renegade Jew
  • Hoist it high and proud: The Confederate flag proclaims a glorious heritage
  • Gay rights have made us dumber, it’s time to get back in the closet
  • Science proves it: Fat-shaming works
  • There’s no hiring bias against women in tech, they just suck at interviews

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr …..

Is it any wonder that companies like Kellogg do not want their name associated with this media outlet?  The only thing that surprises me is that it took them this long to make the decision.

Trump responded to the news by saying that Breitbart was just a publication that covers stories like any other news organization.  Oh, I don’t think that is true! Look again at the headlines above.  Now imagine if the New York Times published any one of those stories!  The indignation would be high, and I guarantee advertisers would begin pulling their ads immediately!

The good news is that this may signal the beginning of the end for Breitbart, which would be no loss to anyone, except perhaps da trumpeter in whose pocket they reside.  While the government cannot censor Breitbart under the Constitutional 1st Amendment, there can still be consequences for their hate speech and bigotry.  The move by Kellogg and others speak volumes – it says that respect for others is not dead, as many of us had feared.  It says that, although these companies are in business to make a profit, they also understand that their customers deserve better and they must maintain a higher standard.  Other companies, however, like Google and Facebook, although both have policies banning hate speech, have not yet withdrawn from Breitbart.

There is a Twitterer called Sleeping Giants that has begun a campaign to convince other advertisers to withdraw their ads from Breitbart.  I do not use Twitter as a rule, though I have an account, but I did get on and check this out.  What they recommend is:

  1. Look on Breitbart and take a screenshot of an ad
  2. Tweet it to the advertiser with a polite note
  3. Tag

I applaud Sleeping Giants for their effort and sincerely hope the movement takes hold and thousands of people do what the tweet suggests!  We The People have power, we have a voice, and we can, in the words of the late Nancy Reagan, “Just say NO” to racism, hate speech and those who support it, whether directly or indirectly.  The only downfall to Sleeping Giants’ suggestion is that you have to actually visit Breitbart’s online site.  I did this tonight in preparation for this post, and was sickened by almost every story.  Even the most innocuous stories take on an aura of hate when reported by Breitbart and the few stories I actually looked into were filled with misinformation and blatant lies.  Breitbart claims to have some 45 million readers, though Bloomberg puts the number at a more modest 19 million.  I am amazed, and yet probably shouldn’t be, that so many people have allowed themselves to be brainwashed by this faux news outlet.

My visit to Breitbart sickened me, but alas, I did not find a single advertisement!  I was hoping to try the suggestion of Sleeping Giants, but after perusing three or four stories, I still had not stumbled upon a single ad.  I find this perplexing and am not sure quite what to make of it, but will have to investigate further another time, as my time is limited at the moment by a real need for sleep.

tony-3My main point, however, in case you have forgotten it in the midst of all my late-night rambling, is that I applaud the position taken by Kellogg and other companies who refuse to support an organization that promotes misogyny, racism, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, homophobia, and every other form of bigotry.  I do hope that more and more companies will put distance between themselves and Breitbart and that Breitbart ceases to exist within a short time.  Now, let’s all get out there and buy some Corn Flakes tomorrow!  Thank you, Kellogg!

Nightmare on Pennsylvania Avenue

trump-cabinet

As we near the end of this mind-boggling election that has occupied our thoughts for the last year-and-a-half, some speculate that there is a possibility that da trumpeter might actually become the next President of the United States (POTUS).  I cringe and shudder, and still I believe that common sense will prevail next Tuesday and in just over two months we will be seeing the inauguration of President Hillary Clinton.  But just for the sake of argument, I thought it might be fun to consider what a Trump presidency might actually look like.  The writers at Politico must have had the same thought, as they published an article  yesterday speculating who da trumpeter would take to the White House with him as advisors.  Based on the choices of the Politico writers, let us take a look at those who would surround da man:

nightmare-2

Ivanka Trump, Special Advisor — Since by all accounts, Trump relies heavily on at least some of his children to provide advice and assistance in his campaign, it only stands to reason they would continue to do so as he transitions into the Oval Office.  However, somebody has to stay behind and run the multiple business Trump owns, and it is, in Trump’s view, a ‘man’s world’, so the boys, Eric and what’s-his-name, will handle the bankruptcy filings and lawsuits for the Trump Corporation.  This leaves his favourite child, Ivanka, to serve on Trump’s advisory team.  Ivanka is more intelligent, more well-spoken and outwardly more even-tempered than her father, however many consider her to be a Donald Trump clone.  I tend to agree – when you look at what she says, she says the same things Trump says, only in a quieter, nicer way.

Corey Lewandowski, Chief of Staff – Fired by Trump in June, Lewandowski almost immediately went to work for CNN where he continued to campaign for Trump, leaving one to wonder if he had ever actually left Trump’s employ.  Turns out his ‘firing’ was nothing more than a political ploy, as he still campaigns with Trump, remains on the Trump payroll, and spreads Trump’s rhetoric far and wide through CNN.  His tendency toward violence and brashness should go far in making him a much-loved Chief of Staff!  He will take great pleasure, I am sure, in doing Trump’s dirty work when necessary … like, daily.

Stephen Miller, Counselor – Often called ‘Donald Trump’s warm-up act’, Miller’s job in the campaign has been to go behind Trump with his whisk broom and dustpan, cleaning up the detritus left behind.  Surprisingly, Miller is capable of speaking in complete sentences, hence his value during the campaign and thereafter.

Hope Hicks, Deputy Communications Director – Ms. Hicks, dubbed by the New York Times as ‘the woman who totally understands Donald Trump’ (scary, isn’t it?), was once a model (seem to be a lot of those in Trump’s retinue, don’t there?) who only entered the political arena a year ago.  It is said that she has a ‘unique bond’ with Trump … no, I am not going to speculate further on that!  But I am unclear, since she refuses to appear on camera, how she will be an effective communications director.  Ah well, I don’t suppose it much matters … if you look at her picture, you can see how she keeps her position.  Just once I would like to see one of his female staff members with a normal body!

Dan Scavino, White House Photographer – Scavino, a life-long Trump employee, began as Trump’s golf caddy, worked his way through the ranks in Trump’s businesses, and now serves as director of social media for the Trump campaign.  He has been dubbed ‘Trump’s Twitter Troll Ringmaster’, since he, like the rest of Trump’s advisors, runs around with a whisk broom and dustpan, cleaning up the messes left by the head clown.  Then again, Scavino is no saint.  He is known for posting doctored or false pictures, including one that implied, untruthfully, that Ted Cruz had an affair with his former staffer Amanda Carpenter.  His unorthodox use of Twitter to convey campaign messages was apparently not lost on Trump, who seems to favor Tweeting over all other forms of communication.

Kellyanne Conway, Communications Director – Kellyanne, his current campaign manager, as communications director?  I am not so sure about this one, as I believe that by the time election day rolls around, she will be happy to walk away from Trump and never look back, except perhaps in her nightmares.  As campaign manager, she is responsible for trying to spin all the outrageous things he says in such a way that the public is somewhat less offended, or convince the public that what he said made some sort of sense.  It is not a job I would want, and she has shown signs many times of being frustrated with da man and his mouth.  But then again, politics makes strange bedfellows, as they say, so who knows?

Steve Bannon, Senior Advisor – America’s #1 thug, is a perfect choice for Trump’s senior advisor, as he shares Trump’s mentality of bullying rather than negotiating to get what he wants. Bannon is the former (?) CEO of Breitbart, the alt-right website that is so far to the right if they went any farther they would fall into the Atlantic Ocean.  The man could be Trump’s twin brother, bluster, bluster, and yet more bluster until nobody hears the conversation.  It is said that Brannon’s influence led Trump to his ridiculous claim that he is the target of a vast globalist conspiracy of bankers and journalists and that his election to the presidency is the only hope for Western civilization. Yes, he and Trump will make a wonderful couple. Bannon even looks as disgusting as Trump! I imagine Breitbart would suddenly be invited to all White House press events.  Ugh.

Alan Garten, White House Counsel – Not much is known about Garten, other than that he is a lawyer (that says it all, doesn’t it?) and likes to sue people.  He and Trump should quickly become best buddies, if they aren’t already.  It is Garten who sends all those letters threatening to sue media outlets for saying bad things about da boss man.

Michael Flynn, National Security Advisor – Although an Obama appointee and a registered Democrat, Trump and Flynn have much in common:  they both love Vladimir Putin, and they both want to throw Hillary Clinton in prison.  He has hands-on military experience, as a retired lieutenant-general, but otherwise I think his only qualification is … well … I cannot think of anything else that would qualify him to be responsible for the security of the nation.

Rudy Giuliani, Senior Advisor – If ‘senior advisor’ is synonymous with ‘boot-licker’, then Rudy is certainly the man for this job!  Giuliani, once known as ‘America’s Mayor’ due to his superior instincts in leading New Yorkers through the tragic aftermath of 9/11, jumped tracks sometime in the last year and is now an obnoxious, fanatical, yes-man to Trump.  If Trump says it, Rudy goes out and says it even louder, if that is possible.  However, as an advisor, I suppose he would have to wait for Trump to tell him what advice he wants, and then Rudy could give him that very advice.  Rudy traded his soul for a position on the Trump team, so I imagine it will work out well for him.

Chris Christie, Attorney General – Well, based on this morning’s ‘breaking news’, I imagine Mr. Christie will be seeking some form of permanent employment in the near future, and I predicted when Christie sold his soul and endorsed Trump that he was doing it in hopes of winning the Attorney General spot in a Trump campaign, so I suppose this should come as no surprise. Of the aforementioned motley crew, Mr. Christie is the only one with government experience beyond the city/local level.  And he would fit well with the team, since even in the aftermath of brutal, cruel insults from Trump during Christie’s own campaign, he caved and endorsed Trump just days after dropping out of the race.  So, he is definitely what Trump is looking for in an advisor:  a whipping boy.

There is only one name off the top of my head that I would add to the list, and that is Dr. Ben Carson, who I believe, like Governor Christie, endorsed Trump for the sole purpose of gaining a high-level position in a Trump administration.  So, I predict that he would be named Surgeon General by da trumpeter.  Like all on this list, he is a yes-man, so whatever Trump believes in, Carson will also believe in.  This likely means that people with disabilities, or those who are weakened by illness will be sent away somewhere … perhaps they could be bussed to a nice set of toxic showers somewhere out in Idaho … out of sight, out of mind.

So there you have it … Trump’s potential advisory team.  If the man himself doesn’t disgust you enough to make you determined to vote for Hillary Clinton, this ragtag bunch certainly should.  My imagination is not yet quite done, so look for at least one more post before Tuesday … Nightmare on Pennsylvania Avenue, Part II.
