When I first read this on Scottie’s Playtime I literally saw red. I was so incensed … still am, for that matter! What the Sam Hell is wrong with people??? I have half a mind (no comments on that, please!) to write a letter to each of these Attorneys General and let them know just what I think of their narrow-minded, shallow, unconscionable bigotry! Grrrrrrrrrrrr … Anyway, please click on the link in the first paragraph of Scottie’s post to read the actual letter … if this doesn’t get your dander up, then nothing will. Thank you, Scottie, for sharing this and raising our blood pressure into the stratosphere!
Seven U.S. state attorneys generalsent a letterto Target on Wednesday warning that clothes and merchandise sold as part of the company’s Pride month campaigns might violate their state’s child protection laws.
Republican attorneys general from Indiana, Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri and South Carolina signed the letter, writing that they were “concerned by recent events involving the company’s ‘Pride’ campaign.”
The attorneys said that they believed the campaign was a “comprehensive effort to promote gender and sexual identity among children,” criticizing items like T-shirts that advertised popular drag queens and a T-shirt that said ‘Girls Gays Theys.’ They also highlighted merchandise with “anti Christian designs such as pentagrams, horned skulls and other Satanic products.”
The letter also criticized Target for donating to GLSEN, an LGBTQ+ organization that works to end bullying in schools based on sexual and gender identity. The company stated in a 2020 guide that…
Hey folks … it’s the weekend! The last weekend in September, as it were, and fall is in the air, right? Right? Wait a minute … if fall is in the air, why is the air 92° F (33° C) outside? Forecast to be above 90° through at least Tuesday. Sheesh. Well, anyway, fortunately my a/c finally … after 5 tries … did get fixed, for which I am thankful. I am in critter-mode today … yeah, yeah, I know … what amn’t I in critter mode? (And yes, I do know that ‘amn’t’ is not legit, but I liked it) Anyway, you’ll get a kick out of what I’ve found to start your weekend with a smile …
You all may have seen this story already, for it has been making the rounds on the Internet … I had seen he headline numerous times, but hadn’t actually read the story until last night when I was trolling the ‘Net looking for ideas for this post. It’s about a couple and their dog, Katie, and I don’t know about you, but it brought tears to my eyes.Katie, a seven-year-old border collie, escaped from a hotel room in July during a trip to Montana with owners Carole and Verne King. Though she’s a social and friendly dog, she’s also skittish and the couple believes the pup was scared by thunder and fled the My Place Hotel while they were out for dinner. They searched the hotel grounds, calling for Katie until early morning. Nothing. The next day, King continued her search, putting up fliers, knocking on doors and posting on social media. In total, King thinks she put up about 500 flyers in the town and surrounding area. She and her husband also brought game cameras and night-vision goggles to their search.
“It was devastating. I got sick to my stomach. I never gave up. I never lost hope.”
To continue her search, King even gave up her job as a postal worker. Complete strangers were keeping her spirit high, sending encouraging texts and crafting sincere Facebook posts.
“I think what I got out of this was the kindness of strangers.”
Early on Sunday morning, Sept. 15, King got a call from a man in the Country Estates neighborhood. He said there was a dog matching Katie’s description in his yard. Just the day before, King and her friend Jan Leland posted fliers in the same neighborhood. Once again, she called Leland for help and rushed out the door. By the time they arrived, however, the dog was already gone. The pair decided to take a walk in the neighborhood, scanning the area with binoculars. They encountered a couple walking and asked if they’d seen a runaway border collie. They hadn’t. But the man said he saw a black dog heading north. King gave the couple a flier and was about to continue on her way.
“As the lady was walking back, she points over to the tree where it’s real dark and says, ‘Is that your dog?’ And I turn and it’s Katie. I just bear-hugged her, I wasn’t going to let her go. Tears were flying, we were screaming, everybody is high-fiving, hugging each other. People are stopping in their vehicles, getting out and hugging us. I think the whole neighborhood knew that we found her.”
After taking Katie to a local emergency vet clinic to assess her condition, King learned that her pup had lost 12 pounds and was severely dehydrated and in starvation mode.
“The doctor walked up to her and she said, “Is this the famous Katie? And her eyes welled up with tears. That touched me.”
The 7-year-old pup received fluids and orders for a special diet of two tablespoons of food every two hours to help retrain her stomach. Even though she’s skin and bones, everyone’s in good spirits as she is expected to make a full recovery.
Now that’s what I call love!
Leave it to big box store Target to start trouble. They have come out with a new Hallowe’en product, and I made the mistake of letting the Feral Five see it. According to the ad …
“One of the most perfect ways to put your cat in the Halloween mood without putting them into uncomfortable outfits (that they most likely aren’t very big fans of) is to get them something spooky to party in! And Target has something just like that to offer. These haunted cat houses are a perfect treat for a cat (or other small critter) and are here just in time for Halloween.”
And then … as I was scrolling through looking at the pictures, I saw Tiger Lily looking over my shoulder with some strange look in her eye. She must have called to the rest in that way of silently communicating that they have, for within 30 seconds, I had Oliver in my lap, Boo atop my desk, Pandora on the arm of my chair, and Tiger on the back of my chair. I was scared, let me tell you. No, Izzy didn’t come out of hiding … actually, I think at that time she was in the kitchen taking advantage of a fresh bowl of kibble. I’ve got to admit that it is pretty cute. The ‘Haunted Mansion Cat Scratcher’ combines a cat’s favorite thing in the world – a cardboard box – with black and orange Halloween elements of a scary house riddled with cobwebs and ghosts. It comes with a two-floor design that includes a perch pad on top and features a scratcher floor on both levels for “endless entertainment”.
“No, guys … just no. The thing probably costs $50 and I can’t afford it!”
But, I sometimes forget that Boo is quite capable of reading for himself, and he opened his mouth, let out a hiss, and said …
“Gwammie … you lyin’ to us … lookie dere … it only costed $16.99 … dat’s not a wot of money, Gwammie. Can we … pwease, pwease, pwease???” 😺😺😺😺😺
Sigh. I will be making a trip to Target tomorrow.
Take a look at this lemon …But it’s really …Acake!!!
And here are a few others …Pretty cool, yes?
Well, folks, that’s a wrap for today … oh … can’t forget the cute animal video now, can I? This is an alpaca named Capudo. Capudo was born on a farm into a herd of about 8 alpacas, but sadly his mum died when he was only a few days old, so the farmer took him home to let his daughter tend to him for six months until he could be weaned from the bottle and returned to the herd. But, turns out Capudo loved the family and especially the family’s dogs so much that, while he visits the herd several times a week, he always seems to want to return to the farmhouse at the end of the day. Watch … you’ll fall in love with him!
Disclaimer: This is a rant. Filosofa is angry and disgusted.
We fear that which we do not understand. This is the source of much of the conflict in the world and always has been. It is the root cause of every single form of bigotry. Last year when the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal in all 50 states, there were radical and irrational responses across the nation. The outcry has only intensified since then. Why? Because many people fear homosexuality, just as many fear blacks, Muslims, Jews, and other who are ‘different’. When I was a child, I was left-handed, and I learned at a very young age that people feared left-handed people. I went to Catholic schools where the nuns would rap my knuckles with a ruler every time they caught me writing with my left hand. I rebelled (surprised?) and remained a ‘southpaw’ until a broken arm forced me to change my writing hand. Most prejudices are stupid. S-T-U-P-I-D. There are two ways people can respond to their fear of a person or group they perceive as being different. They can: a) make an effort to learn about that person, that group, find some common ground and attempt to understand the differences, or b) they can express their fear as hatred and contempt, attempting to either force the ‘different’ one(s) to conform or attempt to eradicate them.
The federal Equality Act of 2015 is a bill in the United States House of Representatives and the Senate that if passed would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include protections that ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, public education, federal funding, credit, and the jury system. Currently in 31 states people are at a risk of being fired, evicted or refused service just because they are LGBT. That is the wrong that this bill seeks to set right. Although the bill has not been passed, and the likelihood of it being passed before next year is slim, there is an ongoing uproar and a number of states are scrambling to pass state laws that counteract the federal bill before it becomes law. The most ludicrous, vicious and inane reaction has come in the form of public restroom discrimination. I have had, and still have, no desire to write about this topic. It is beyond my comprehension why and how this even became an issue, and I have thus far chosen not to waste my time on it. Filosofa is busy and has much weightier things to think and write about. But alas, rather than settling, this issue is becoming a raging inferno and even otherwise intelligent people, sadly including some of my own friends, are reducing themselves to blathering idiots. Let us consider a few facts:
When was the last time you saw a LGBT person in a public venue? Probably every time you go out, but since they look exactly like anybody else, you had no clue.
When was the last time you were in a public restroom with a gay or transgender person? Again, you have no idea because they look exactly like anybody else.
LGBT people are far more likely to be harassed than they are to be harassers.
The mega-retailer, Target, recently announced a non-discriminatory restroom policy that would allow transgender people to use the restroom that matches their gender identity. Two thumbs up to Target for this policy. However, there are those who are dead-set against such progressive, tolerant thinking. Some of those people have formed a coalition and are circulating a petition to boycott Target. The petition has already gained more than 550,000 signatures. First of all, the new ‘hate laws’ passed by North Carolina, Mississippi and others, make it illegal for a transgender person to use the restroom of their current gender identity. Meaning … somebody would have to visually inspect the genitalia of each person entering a public restroom in order to ensure that person used the ‘proper’ facility. I am much more offended by even the thought of such an inspection than I would be the thought of sharing a restroom with a transgender person. Second, WTF does it matter? Some of the comments I have seen bandied about are that people are afraid transgender people will sexually abuse their children. WAKE UP! 99.9% of ALL people, transgender, gay, straight, black, Muslim … ALL people … use a public restroom because they need to ‘take care of business’. They do not go there to molest children. Pedophiles exist and the vast majority of them are not LGBT people. Third, and this applies more to women than to men, there are stalls with doors in public restrooms. I can honestly say that I have never in all my years of using public restrooms seen a person with their pants down in a public restroom! Why does anybody care? In fact, I have actually gone into men’s restrooms before … no, I do not make it a habit, but a couple of times I have mistakenly entered a men’s restroom, and on one occasion I was ill, there was a line at the ladies, so I went into the men’s. The only thing that happened was a gentleman was kind enough to stick around and make sure I was alright.
I avoid public restrooms whenever I can, but not because I am afraid of the people I might encounter. I avoid them because I have a limited immune system and avoid germs as much as possible. However, I have no fear of using a public restroom, I have no fear of encountering a gay person or a transgender person in a restroom, public swimming pool, or any other venue. As much as I like any retail store, I like Target. I am there at least twice a month to purchase cat food, toilet cleaner, paper towels, deodorant, toothpaste, and other household/personal items. In fact, I was there yesterday. I will continue to shop at Target as long as their prices remain competitive. I do not shop at Wal-Mart, as I object to their employment and import policies, not to mention that their products are sub-standard. However, I have not circulated a petition, nor do I criticize others – I simply do not shop there. If you don’t want to shop at Target, fine … it won’t be as crowded when I go there next Saturday. But what is the point in yelling it to the world, in signing a pointless petition, in trying to bend the world to your close-minded way of thinking?
Feelings are what they are and are neither ‘right’ nor ‘wrong’, they simply are. But actions will be judged as being right or wrong, proper or improper, acceptable or unacceptable. Those who honestly fear encountering a gay or transgender person in a public restroom should probably avoid public restrooms altogether. It may take time, but ultimately this nation is moving toward tolerance for all. Slowly, but surely. There are so many serious issues in this world that should demand our attention, our consideration, demand that we use our voices to speak out against injustice. The whole issue of who has a right to use which public restroom is not one of those critical issues, it is only being made to seem so by the masses. I do not have time for this, and neither should anyone else. Go worry about how to take care of Syrian refugees, how to end racism, how to feed starving children, how to save our environment. Next time you find yourself thinking about who should use which restroom, go plant some flowers to help the bee population.
