Full Bore Snarky Snippets …

Perhaps it’s the holiday season that’s done it, or perhaps it’s just an overload of Trumpism.  Perhaps it is the cold temperatures and lack of sunlight.  But whatever it is, I am in a mood these days.  A mood that has my tongue in shreds for I have bitten it so many times as I try to be a good grannie and show some enthusiasm for such things as the Christmas village and the live tree, the cookie-baking and decorating/shopping/wrapping/spending.  A mood that has me crying myself to sleep at nights as I wonder what the hell this world is coming to.  Anyway, the result is I am in super-snark mode, so you may want to don your ear plugs for this one …

Don’t drink the water …

drink-waterFrom the very first line, it galled me …

“On Tuesday, Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency announced it would roll back Obama-era rules that, under cover of the 1972 Clean Water Act, empowered federal bureaucrats to regulate virtually every puddle, pond and drainage ditch under the guise of protecting wetlands.”

This statement is from the Editorial Board of the Las Vegas Review-Journal and can be found on the EPA’s website.  The first thing to note is that it refers to “Donald Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency”.  THE EPA DOES NOT BELONG TO DONALD F***ING TRUMP!!!  The EPA is an agency of the United States federal government that is funded by, and thus belongs to, WE THE PEOPLE!

Miriam and Sheldon Adelson

Guess, by the way, who owns the Las Vegas Review-Journal?  None other than Trump’s mega-donor Sheldon Adelson, the casino magnate who, along with his wife, donated $55 million this year to groups dedicated to securing Republican control of the House and Senate.  Adelson’s wife was mysteriously awarded the ‘Presidential Medal of Freedom’ for no reason other than the obscene amount of money she and hubby spent to help Trump get elected.  The Adelsons donated some $83 million to help Trump get elected, and another $5 million to his inaugural fund.

The editorial called this week’s rollback of Obama-era clean water rules “another administrative success story in its battle against the overweening administrative state.”  Believe me, folks, this is not in any way, shape or form a ‘success’, but is another nail in the coffin of our overall health and the state of our environment.  The Clean Water Rule protected the water we drink from chemicals and waste being dumped into our water supply by fossil fuel producers, manufacturers, and agribusiness.

Think about this one … one in three Americans gets their water from a source that will no longer qualify as ‘protected’.

There will be legal battles and it is unlikely that anything will change in the immediate future, but this is one more signal from the Trump administration that big business carries the day and We The Little People have little or no value to Trump and his minions.  Yo! … you supporters of Trump … do you honestly still believe that he is “one of us”?

Revenge of the eejits …

When asked by a Reuters’ reporter if he was concerned about a possible impeachment, Trump replied …

“I’m not concerned, no.  I think that the people would revolt if that happened.”

The people … would revolt?  What people???  First, only a minority, although an inexplicable 40% minority, even tolerate the buffoon.  And of that 40%, probably only 5% have the guts to take to the streets in protest.  And if there was a revolt, the U.S. military and National Guard would put it down quickly enough … trust me, a tank trumps a man with an AR-15 most any day.  So no, Donnie boy, there might be a few isolated incidents, a bit of grumbling, and a bunch of hot air from the talking heads over at Fox, but there would be no wide-scale revolution that would put you back on your throne!trump-jailShould he be impeached?  Absolutely, for he is the most corrupt, dirtiest ‘president’ in the history of this nation, and he is destroying the country just as surely as Hitler destroyed Germany in 1933.  Will he be impeached?  Probably not.  Even if he is impeached in the House of Representatives, the odds of the Senate voting to convict and remove him from office are slim-to-none, for they are all lapdogs, boot-lickers, whose personal fortunes are tied to his.  But if he is impeached and removed … his next office will likely have very thick iron bars.

LIES, lies and more lies …

In the past week, Trump has told so damn many lies about his “wall” that it is the source of dark mirth around the globe.  He claims that large sections have already been built … they have not.  He claims that it is necessary to the nation’s security … it is not.  And now … wait for it … now, he claims that Mexico is actually paying for it!  They are not, in case anyone even still cares.

His muddled theory here is …

“I often stated, ‘One way or the other, Mexico is going to pay for the Wall.’ This has never changed. Our new deal with Mexico (and Canada), the USMCA, is so much better than the old, very costly & anti-USA NAFTA deal, that just by the money we save, MEXICO IS PAYING FOR THE WALL!”

Anyone who ever had any doubts about the mental capacity of this ‘man’ … never fear … he has the mind of an eight-year-old, at least!

There is no consensus that provisions in the new trade deal would result in Mexico funding a border wall, and former Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray tweeted following the announcement of an initial agreement on the USMCA that Mexico would never pay for the wall, even through the new deal.  I ask again, would somebody please wake us from this nightmare???

And that is all the snark for tonight, folks.  Well, actually I have plenty more, but I should save some for tomorrow, yes?

A Tale Of Two Tales …

“There’s no problem on the planet that can’t be solved without violence. That’s the lesson of the civil rights movement.” – Andrew Young

Two stories hit my radar and make me wonder what people are thinking … if, indeed, they are thinking … and also make me wonder, as I have many a time in the past year-and-a-half, what has become of our society.

The first pertains to threats to lynch a congressman …

Al-Green

Rep. Al Green

Al Green has been the U.S. Representative from Texas’s 9th congressional district since 2005.  He is a democrat, and also happens to be African-American.  Last week, Mr. Green, along with many others, criticized Donald Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey and, as it came to light that the firing was a result of Mr. Comey’s investigation into Trump’s Russian connections, Congressman Green called for Trump’s impeachment.  He was not alone, and even a few republicans in Congress made similar comments.  However, to the best of my knowledge, no others received the same response to their remarks as Congressman Green.

For example:

“Hey, Al Green, we got an impeachment for you. It’s going to be yours. Was actually gonna give you a short prop trial before we hang your n—– ass.”

“You’re not going to impeach anybody, you f—— n—– … You’ll be hanging from a tree. I didn’t see anybody calling for the impeachment of your n—– Obama when he was born in Kenya. He’s not even an American. So f— you, n—–.”

sadTwo republican representatives, Justin Amash from Michigan and Carlos Curbelo from Florida also called for Trump’s impeachment last week, but they did not receive lynching threats.

According to The Washington Post, “It’s unclear whether there is a police investigation of the calls, though hate crime charges are not likely. The FBI defines hate crimes as crimes committed based on a bias against a person’s race, color, religion or national origin. But for a crime to exist, there must an accompanying act of violence, such as murder, arson or vandalism. Hate itself is not a crime — and the FBI is mindful of protecting freedom of speech and other civil liberties.”

Most of you know that I am quite serious about protection of 1st Amendment rights, defend them avidly.  When somebody threatens to lynch a man, that exceeds the bounds of the rights guaranteed under the 1st Amendment.  Period.  There can be no argument. Likely these are empty threats, phone calls made by cowards … racist, bigoted cowards.  But what if they aren’t?  Lynching of black people has a long and ugly history in this country, the last recorded one being Michael Donald in Mobile, Alabama in 1981. Those of us with consciences cringe at even hearing the word.  These threats, and the people who would make such threats, have no place in our society today.

david-kustoff

Rep. David Kustoff

The second story is that of Wendi L. Wright of Weakley County, Tennessee.  Ms. Wright was incensed a few weeks ago, as were many of us, when the House of Representatives irresponsibly caved on the bill to repeal ACA and replace it with … basically a bill that would deny healthcare to some 24 million people.  I, too, was incensed that our elected representatives were so irresponsive to the needs of their constituents.  However, I did not go out and attempt to run my representative off the road.  Ms. Wright did … she tailed the car carrying Representative David Kustoff on May 8th. When the driver of the congressman’s car became alarmed, he pulled into a driveway, at which point Ms. Wright got out of her car, walked over to the one in which Kustoff was riding and began pounding on the windows, screaming obscenities.  Then she stood in front of the car to keep them from pulling out from the driveway.

Wendi L. Wright

Ms. Wright left before police arrived, but went home and posted details of the encounter on her Facebook page, which is how law enforcement officials found her.  She is now out of jail on $1,000 bond.  At first glance, this story seems almost humorous, but it had the potential to have become deadly.  My fear is that with more and more contempt for the needs of the citizens coming out of Washington, with We The People being represented less and less every week, our needs and wishes obviously irrelevant to the wealthy administration, we will begin seeing even more episodes like the one between Ms. Wright and Mr. Kustoff.  And sooner or later, somebody will end up dead.

These two stories highlight some bitter facts about our society and about the influence of the current occupant of the Oval Office and his minions.  We are an angry society … I understand this.  I, too, am angry.  However violence solves nothing.  We are better than this and it’s about damn time we all came to realize that the hate, the vitriol, the name-calling and labels, the ranting, the threats … none of these solve anything.  We are rapidly spiraling into an abyss from which there may be no return in our lifetimes.  Let’s get the rich, white, inconsiderate bums out of Congress and out of the White House, but for Pete’s sake, let us do it with our voices and our votes, not our lives.

Meanwhile, Back on the Campaign Trail …

Remember a few times when I have commented on Trump’s rallies, held since his inauguration in January?  I was puzzled … since he had already won last year’s election, had already taken office, why the heck is he still holding campaign-style rallies?  Well, wonder no more, for I now know the answer.  He is, in fact, campaigning … already … this is the beginning of his “2020 re-election campaign”.  WHAT??? … this ‘man’ is not even likely to be in office by the time 2020 rolls around!  How can he possibly … the unmitigated gall!

According to The Washington Post,  he raised $42.6 million in the first quarter of 2017.  Now it happens that I have two problems with this.  The first is that these rallies are costing We The People.  We pay for his travel, meals, and extra security required as he stands amid thousands of people.  Earlier this week, Mick Mulvaney stated that this administration does not think it is right to ask taxpayers to pay to keep poor people from starving … but they have no qualms about asking us to pay for Trump to waste time and money campaigning for a re-election that, hopefully, will never happen???  I object!

The second problem I have is with the donations, or rather the donors.  According to the Federal Election Commission (FEC) report, most of the donations were small amounts, under $200, from individuals, with very little coming in from larger, wealthy donors.  Keep in mind, these are the very same people who are crying that they cannot make ends meet, that they need more money, that their taxes are too high … and yet they will give $20, $50, or $100 to the Trump campaign for re-election which is nearly four years away?  Hey, Republicans … if you have money to throw away, as you obviously do, send it to me.  First, I could use some new socks and what’s left, I would use to feed some hungry children, help a needy family pay their rent, or something that provides humanitarian value!

And the third problem … did I say I had only 2? … is the way the money is being spent, which is perfectly legal but, in the opinion of this writer should not be.  First, of course, the ‘campaign’ is buying t-shirts and those ugly “Make America Great Again” hats.  But now comes the kicker …

“Trump Tower in Manhattan, where the campaign is based, collected $300,000 in rent. At least another $25,000 went to other properties, including Mr. Trump’s hotel in Las Vegas and a golf course he owns in Florida. The campaign disbursed tens of thousands of dollars to a firm owned by Mr. Trump’s chief strategist Stephen K. Bannon. The bill was for “administrative assistant/secretarial” services.” – Haag/Shorey, New York Times, 14 April 2017

I do not see Mr. Trump qualifying for a re-election bid in 2020, but he certainly has no compunction about taking money from the very people he convinced to vote for him by promising them a better life, then using said money to further pad his own and Bannon’s already fat pockets.  The people who are donating at rallies and through email solicitations are victims of their own making in Trump’s ‘reverse Robin Hood’ scheme.

Oh, by the way … Trump has even selected his slogan for the 2020 election.  He couldn’t very well use “Make America Great Again” because if, after four years in office he hadn’t made it great, the slogan rather loses its luster.  So, for the 2020 campaign we will have his new slogan shoved down our collective throats:  “Keep America Great”.  Sigh.
