Saturday’s Snarky Snippets

nightmareThe weekend is here and one of my readers told me I should ‘relax’.  Relax???  What the heck is that?  I’ve got laundry to do, need to get out and get some Mother’s Day cards, and just because it’s a weekend, the news cycle doesn’t stop … there is still much out there to stir my ire and make me snarky (or perhaps snarky is just my natural personality?).  So, here are a couple of snippets for you to ponder upon …

Last year, various committees of the House of Representatives sought witness testimony from people in the know about Trump’s gross negligence and abuse of power.  They asked people to please come and testify, under oath.  Few did.  They issued subpoenas.  Few were honoured.  Why?  Because Donald Trump ordered them not to testify.  A few found their cojones and testified anyway, but very few.  First, this was an abuse of power, but since he has surrounded himself with ‘yes-men’, he got by with it.  But more to the point, if you have nothing to hide, then why on earth would you stop people from testifying honestly and clearing your name?  Thus, the only conclusion was that Donald Trump was a corrupt, likely criminal person who holds the highest office in the land, despite having lost the election by nearly 3 million votes.

fauciWhy, you ask, am I re-hashing old territory?  Because it’s happening again.  The House Appropriations Committee, looking into the government’s bungled response to the coronavirus, requested testimony by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.  Dr. Fauci has been a prominent figure, until recently, at Trump’s daily ‘press briefings’ and has been the only one willing to correct Trump’s erroneous statements, the only one willing to tell the public the truth.  But … Trump will not allow Dr. Fauci to testify.  The committee is looking into the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, the chaos that followed Trump’s obfuscation and lies, the resulting excessive deaths that might not have happened, if the leader of the nation had used halfway good judgment.  For Trump to forbid Dr. Fauci from testifying is yet another example of obstruction of justice and abuse of power, but … that is the norm for this administration.  Are we really willing to, as Mick Mulvaney suggested we should, just “get over it”?  I’m not.

fauci-2From what I’ve seen, Dr. Fauci seems to be a straight shooter who isn’t afraid to tell the truth, who isn’t afraid to correct or contradict Trump.  I would like to think that he will do the right thing and voluntarily testify, despite Trump’s orders.  Will he?  Does he have cojones, or is he just another coward like Don McGahn, Wilbur Ross, and others whose loyalties lie directly to Donald Trump, and not the people of this nation?

White House press secretaries … ho-hum

In past administrations, there have been some very reputable people in the position of White House Press Secretary.  Not so in the Trump administration.  It began with Sean Spicer who was the first in the administration, on inauguration day, to utter an ‘alternative fact’, to be defined as such the next day by the ignominious Kellyanne Conway.  Sean said the crowds for Trump’s inauguration were the biggest ever, or bigger than Obama’s in 2009, or some such nonsense which was so far from the truth as to be laughable.

Then came the hateful Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who defended the indefensible for nearly two years.  If Trump said “Jump!”, she asked, “How high, sir?”  Presumably it took a toll on her and she left in July of 2019.

Next up was Melania’s personal servant, Stephanie Grisham who held the title and received the pay for nine months, but never held the first press briefing, and in fact turned her nose up at reporters and screeched at them like a banshee.  She really doesn’t even count, except that We the People paid her out of our own hard-earned tax dollars.

mcenanyAnd now, we have a new one … rather an idiot, if you ask me.  Her name is Kayleigh McEnany and she held her first press briefing yesterday.  Now, she started out by promising that there would be more press briefings than there have been for the past year.  Um … there have been none for the past 13 months, so she already beat that average.  She also made another ‘promise’ …

“I will never lie to you. You have my word on that.”

laughing-gif

And then she proceeded to tell a lie, that the Mueller investigation had amounted to “the complete and total exoneration of  … Trump.”  And then she told another lie, referring to “salacious, awful and verifiably false allegations that were made against Justice Kavanaugh.”  And another that “not a single American has died for lack of a ventilator.”  After a few more lies and misquotes, she ended with …

“Everyone should watch the Fox News town hall with the president from 7 to 9 p.m. [on Sunday]. It will be can’t-miss television, much like the highly rated President Trump coronavirus task force briefings have been.”

I would rather take a bath in a puddle of pig manure than waste two hours of my life watching that crap!  And “highly rated … briefings”?????  They have been the brunt of jokes and criticisms, for they have not been briefings, but campaign rallies, ego trips for the Oaf in the Oval Office!  Ms. McEnany fits right in with the concept of Trump staff … no concept of the difference between fact and fiction, and a blind loyalty to a ‘man’ who deserves none.  My prediction is that she will be even more obnoxious and disgusting than Sarah Huckabee Sanders was, and that’s a pretty tough act to beat.

Well, folks, it’s Saturday, so I will stop at only two snippets today and leave you with a ‘toon.  Have a happy weekend!toon

What Happens When One Wallows With Hogs …

I refuse to rescind an Idiot of the Week award, so I won’t.  But I have to admit that I currently have a great deal of sympathy for one of my former IOTW award winners, namely Sean Spicer.  He is still an idiot, but perhaps the main thing that makes him so is that he accepted the job as White House Press Secretary to begin with.  He worked on Trump’s campaign, he knew that Trump was a liar, a bully, and that the job of presenting him in the brightest light possible to the press would be an impossible task.  Still, he said ‘yes’, and he has paid a high price in the nearly four months Trump has been in office.

spicer-memeA recent op-ed written by Dana Milbank of The Washington Post, who is a long-time friend of Spicer, reads:

“Alas, poor Spicer! I knew him well. He was one of the top Republican flacks in town, affable and quick-witted, always happy to dish with reporters off the record. I liked him. I still like him — or at least that Spicer I knew before he answered Donald Trump’s call.”

Milbank continues, “The president turned him into a national punchline on his first day on the job, forcing him to provide “alternative facts” about the inauguration.”

And then, of course, there are all those Saturday Night Live sketches which, I must admit, are pretty funny, but try to imagine how poor Sean feels sitting at home on Saturday night with his wife and children watching himself as the laughingstock of the nation.

And now, the culmination of it all is that rumours are flying about Washington that Spicer will be replaced by the end of the week.  So yes, I do rather feel sorry for him.  He was woefully unprepared and unqualified for this position under this president, as only a consummate liar who is comfortable with dealing constantly in ‘alternative facts’, lies, contradictions and basically wallowing with the hogs could excel at the job. I suspect Sean Spicer is, deep down, too good a person to work for Trump.

So who, you ask, will replace Sean?  Well, my first thought was that last week’s press briefings by Sarah Huckabee Sanders was a ‘job interview’ of sorts, and a number of the DC pundits agreed with me.  But then as of yesterday, it is rumoured that one Kimberly Guilfoyle of Fox News is top dog for the position.  I did not like Sanders because in her first press briefing she said it was time to “move on” from the Russian investigations, and I was incensed.  I cursed my laptop, saying, “No, you dumba## bi$%&, I WILL NOT move on until I have all the answers!!!”  My trusty Dell cursed back, saying “command unknown”.  Sigh.

But as much as I disliked Ms. Sanders, I dislike Ms. Guilfoyle even more.  First, she is actively campaigning for the position and says she possesses the necessary qualities … which are, as I noted above, being a master of lies, contradictions, and wallowing in slop with the hogs.  By her own admission, then, she possesses those qualities.  Add to that a bonus qualification: she is a back-stabber, being perfectly willing to knock poor Sean off the podium.

My next reason for disliking her is this statement she made:

“I think I have a very good relationship with the president. I think I enjoy a very straightforward and authentic, very genuine relationship, one that’s built on trust and integrity, and I think that’s imperative for success in that position”.

Certain keywords here throw up red flags:  straightforward, authentic, genuine, trust, and integrity.  Not a single one of those words can be applied to Donald Trump even under the best of circumstances.  So this proves her to be either of a very low IQ, or of a very low character … or both.  And this …

“If you want to be successful and do communications with President Trump, you have to be someone who he actually wants to spend a little bit of time with.”  Shades of Monica Lewinsky?  I wonder if she owns a blue dress?

Third reason for my dislike: In her interview with the Bay Area News Group, Guilfoyle talked about Spicer as if he were already gone: “Sean Spicer is a very nice man and a patriot. He’s dedicated himself to this public service. Very tough position he’s in. I wish him the best, and I know he puts a lot of effort into it.”  Geez, lady, why don’t you just roast the pig before you kill it???

roast pig

My fourth and final reason, perhaps the least rational of the list, is that she currently works for Fox News and has a fake smile.

As of today, Sean Spicer is still the White House press secretary and reportedly was told by Trump that his job is safe … for now.  But we all know that nothing Trump says is necessarily the truth.  In reality, Sean Spicer would ultimately be far better off if he were let go.  Eventually he would get another job, one where he could once again learn to respect himself and do his job with integrity.  The past four months have taken a toll on the man, as evidenced by the before and after pictures.

Idiot of the Week – Sean Spicer

Idiot of the Week medal

I almost feel badly for this week’s award recipient, almost feel sorry for him.  Note that I said ‘almost’.  Yet I do not feel badly enough to give him a pass on this one, as I have been giving him passes for several months now and he just does not learn from his mistakes.  Who, you ask?  Why, none other than the White House Press Secretary, Mr. Sean Spicer, of course!  And most of you know exactly why I could no longer leave him alone, but in case any have been living on a desert island for the past few days, I shall enlighten you.

On Tuesday (11 April 2017), at the daily White House press briefing, Spicer was asked about the U.S. response to Assad using chemical weapons in attacks in Syria last week. His response, which will surely go into the annals of history as one of the stupidest things ever said by a WH Press Secretary, was:

“I think a couple things. You, look — we didn’t use chemical weapons in World War II. You know, you had someone as despicable as Hitler who didn’t even sink to using chemical weapons.”

A bit later, after being reminded of the Holocaust in which Hitler and the Nazis gassed millions to death, Spicer attempted to clarify with …

“I think when you come to sarin gas, there was no — he was not using the gas on his own people the same way that Assad is doing. I mean, there was clearly, I understand your point. Thank you. Thank you. I appreciate that. There was not, in the, he brought them into the Holocaust centers, I understand that. But I’m saying, in the way that Assad used them where he went into towns, dropped them down to innocent—into the middle of towns, it was brought, the use of it. I appreciate the clarification. That was not the intent.”

Sometimes, the more one says, the deeper he digs his grave.

So why do I almost feel sorry for Mr. Idiot Spicer?  Because, quite simply, he is a lightweight who is out of his league.  Possibly the worst decision he ever made in his life was to accept his current position.  Think about it … yes, certainly there is a great deal of prestige associated with being the man out front, the liaison between the man sitting in the Oval Office and the press corps, and the job pays a living wage of $176,000 per year plus bennies.  But some jobs just aren’t worth it. How would you like waking up every single morning, knowing that your job would require you to go in front of millions of people and tell whatever lies your boss wanted told that day.  How would you like being forced to defend one of the most vile men on earth … every single day?  I couldn’t do it … wouldn’t do it … there simply is not enough money. But the reason I stop short of full-fledged empathy for Spicer is that he made the choice to accept the position, and having previously worked on Trump’s campaign, he already knew what sort of person Trump is and should have anticipated what the job would entail, yet he accepted the position.  And in the 82 days since the inauguration, he has willingly lied, covered lies with more lies, verbally abused and shut-down members of the press, and indulged in childish temper tantrums.  So no, Sean, I do NOT feel sorry for you, and I find you most deserving of Filosofa’s Idiot of the Week award!

Spicer covers Trumps ass

But we all know that it takes more than just a single act of idiocy to qualify for this award, so let us look back over the past 82 days to see what else Sean has done to qualify.

  • The very day after the inauguration and two days before he would give his first press conference, Spicer told his first lie and ignited his first controversy. He claimed, in support of Trump’s prior claim, that the inauguration had drawn the “largest audience to ever to witness an inauguration, period – both in person and around the globe.”  This was not only a lie, but it was a whopper … the granddaddy of all lies … and the truth was verifiable!  There were aerial photos, parking data, Metro ridership data, and more to prove that both of President Obama’s inaugurations were far better attended.  Yet, Spicer accused the media of being the ones telling the lie and stood by his data-free claim.
  • The next day, when confronted with hard data tht disputed his claim, Spicer said that, “sometimes we can disagree with the facts” … a ridiculous statement that then led an alumni of the idiot of the Week award, Kellyanne Conway, to coin the phrase “alternative facts”.
  • Sean is not well-spoken, articulate, and often tumbles & fumbles his words (that’s how liars are), then gets annoyed and slings a slur or two at the press in attendance. In February, speaking about the reportedly tense phone call between Trump and Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Mr Spicer referred to the Prime Minister as Trumble instead of Turnbull.  Then later that month, he referred to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as “Joe Trudeau”.
  • When his boss (who, by the way, won an Idiot of the Year award in 2016 and is on target for another in 2017) claimed, falsely and without a shred of evidence, that President Obama had “wiretapped” him during the campaign, Spicer stood loyally behind him. When asked about the claim, Spicer  said — with a straight face, mind you — that Trump used the term “wiretap” in quotes not because he’s terrible at grammar (and kinda stupid), but because he was using the specific term as a stand-in for a broader forms of surveillance.  “The President used the word wiretaps in quotes to mean, broadly, surveillance and other activities.”

spicer-air-quotes.jpg

Then during a mid-March press conference, April Ryan of American Urban Radio Networks was attempting to ask a question:

“With all these investigations, questions of what is is, how does this administration try to revamp its image? Two and a half months in you got this Yates story today, you got other things going on, you got Russia, you got wiretapping…”

“No we don’t have that,” Spicer interrupted. “I’ve said it from the day that i got here until whatever, that there’s no connection. You’ve got Russia. If the president puts Russian salad dressing on his salad tonight, somehow that’s a Russian connection!”

Ryan tried to respond, he kept speaking over her, saying, “But every single person, well no, I appreciate your agenda here, but the reality is, no no no, hold on, at some point, report the facts.”

To his credit, Spicer did at least apologize for his Hitler faux pas, something that I cannot recall any other member of the Trump team doing since they overran the White House.  He still remains Filosofa’s Idiot of the Week, however.  I like the way Andrew Rosenthal, writing for the New York Times, put it: “Spicer twists the truth as frequently as regular people change their socks.”

By the way, in case you were wondering about the cover picture … that is Sean in the bunny suit with President George W. Bush back in 2008.

So, Mr. Sean Spicer, to honour you for all your lies, bumbling and abusive treatment of journalists, I hereby award you the highly coveted Idiot of the Week award.  I imagine you will want to hang it in your office … your boss, by the way, has one very similar, as does another of your co-workers, Ms. Conway!  Enjoy your award!
