Open Letter to Members of the U.S. Congress

Dear Members of Congress …

Once again, I am compelled on behalf of the citizens of this nation to ask you to please do the jobs you swore to do when you took that oath of office and swore to uphold the U.S. Constitution.  I urge you to recall, if you will, that Donald Trump is not your employer … We The People are, in fact, your employers.  As such, we are very concerned when we hear Trump threaten to interfere with the business of the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and most importantly, the Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s influence into our election process in 2016.

Never before in the history of this nation has there been such corruption as we have seen these past 19 months, not even during the Watergate scandal, which pales in comparison to Trumpgate.  If Donald Trump is allowed to continue his worrisome tirades unchecked, there is a very real possibility that we will never know the truth about what happened and who was involved. In that case, elections may well never be fair and honest again in this nation.

There is already more than ample evidence that there was communication and camaraderie between Russian officials and members of the Trump family & campaign, and yet when he calls the investigation a “witch hunt”, you turn a blind eye.  We the People have not only a right, but also a responsibility to find out the truth and act accordingly.  YOU … the members of the legislative branch, the people who are supposed to provide the “checks and balances” on the executive power, certainly have a responsibility to ensure that the facts, the truth, comes out.  Thus far, you have not done the job for which you are being paid!

I, on behalf of every citizen of this nation, call on you today to introduce and pass bi-partisan legislation protecting the integrity of the Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, and Special Counsel Robert Mueller.  For once in your term in office, please do the bidding of the people who voted you into office and whose hard-earned tax dollars are feeding your children.  This is, quite possibly, your last opportunity to do the right thing.

And The Pile Of Lies Grows … As Does Pinocchio’s Nose

In my post yesterday, A Session with Sessions , I claimed in no uncertain terms that I firmly believed Jeff Sessions lied under oath on Tuesday, 13 June 2017.  I was fairly confident at that time that proof of his lies would be forthcoming, but I had no idea that it would come so soon.

On Tuesday, Jeff Sessions testified, under oath, that he did not believe he had any contacts with lobbyists working for Russian interests over the course of Trump’s campaign. Today, two days later, Richard Burt, a lobbyist who has represented Russian interests in Washington, confirmed that he attended two dinners hosted by Jeff Sessions during the 2016 campaign.

Not only that, but Burt advised then candidate Trump on his first major foreign policy speech, a role that brought him into contact with Sessions personally. The speech on which Mr. Burt corroborated was delivered … wait for it … at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington on 27 April 2016, the very date that Mr. Sessions denies having had any contact with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak. Well, he actually said he ‘doesn’t remember’ any conversation with Kislyak … I suppose there is a difference.

According to a report by The Guardian …

“Burt, who previously served on the advisory board of Alfa Capital Partners, a private equity fund where Russia’s Alfa Bank was an investor and last year was lobbying on behalf of a pipeline company that is now controlled by Gazprom, Russia’s state-controlled energy conglomerate, first told Politico in October that he had been invited to two dinners that were hosted by Sessions last summer, at the height of the presidential campaign.

Sessions, a former senator for Alabama who was chairman of the Trump campaign’s national security committee, reportedly invited Burt so that he could discuss issues of national security and foreign policy.”

Mr. Sessions … do you know the meaning of the word ‘perjury’?

Carter Page, a former Trump campaign adviser whose interactions with Russia are under FBI investigation and who is known to have been a liaison between the Trump campaign and Russian officials last year, said he found “the entire line of questioning to be near the pinnacle of witch hunt tactics. In the grand scheme of things, the severe civil rights abuses by Clinton-Obama-Comey regime carried out against myself and other supporters of the Trump campaign in their illegal attempts to influence the 2016 election will help clarify how irrelevant all these petty side-questions are.”

Who knew there was even a “Clinton-Obama-Comey regime”?  And who knew they were on a witch hunt to bring down poor Mr. Page and the Trump supporters?  Mr. Page, it should be noted, has written or is writing a book.

Truth:  that which is true or in accordance with fact or reality; a fact or belief that is accepted as true.

The concept of truth, of fact, has been blurred or completely lost in Trump’s world of alternative facts.  We can never believe a single word, without first checking to confirm the veracity, that is emitted from the mouths of Trump and his minions.  The dwindling number of Trump supporters still claim to believe, to hang on his every word, but … are they trying to kid us, or are they trying to convince themselves?

In less than five months, Trump, Sessions, Tillerson, Kushner and the rest have turned what was once a fairly stable democracy into a shambles, a joke.  There is no transparency, there is not even any longer a pretense of operating the government ‘of the people, by the people, and for the people’We The People have been shoved aside, not important in the grand scheme of things. Donald J. Trump is not a president, but a wanna-be king, and his hopes are that the likes of Vladimir Putin can help him find his crown. His goal was never to “make America great again” … it was always to “make Trump rich again”. And if achieving that goal requires lies, corruption, scandal and other crimes against the nation, so be it, for Donald aims to have his way.

lies.jpgLike an animal caught in a trap, Trump is lashing out at his critics.  On Thursday, he again tweeted that he was the victim of a massive “witch hunt”.  I know I am tired of hearing his “oh poor me” tweets of woe, but apparently even some of his own are tired of it.  Republican Senator John Thune was asked on “Morning Joe” Thursday if Bob Mueller is a man of integrity and whether he had done anything so far in the conduct of the investigation that lead him (Thune) to believe Mueller is conducting a witch hunt.  Thune’s response:

“No, he is a man of integrity, Mark, and he needs to be able to do his work. And I think it’s better for all of us if that work continues. It’s — obviously he is going to get to the bottom and he is going to find the facts, and I think that’s his role. And I think we ought to let him continue to do that and I assume at some point there will be an end to all this. He’ll have done his investigation and there will be whatever findings there are.”

Even Trump lapdog Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell could not support or defend Trump’s tweet, saying only, “I typically don’t comment on the president’s tweeting habits.”

I have nothing but pity and contempt for any who still believe, or claim to believe, the lies of Trump, Sessions and the rest, for they are the ones who wrought upon this nation the utter chaos under which we are now forced to live, and they have only themselves to blame for the destruction of our democracy, our society, and our sanity.

WITCH HUNT!!!!!!!!

witch-4The first witch hunt in what would become the United States, began in March 1662, in Hartford Connecticut, with the sudden and unexplained death of 8-year-old Elizabeth Kelly. Little Elizabeth had been fine just days before when she returned home with a neighbor, Goodwife Ayres. The next night she became ill, and the parents later claimed that she woke up screaming “Father! Father! Help me, help me! Goodwife Ayres is upon me. She chokes me. She kneels on my belly. She will break my bowels. She pinches me. She will make me black and blue.” After Elizabeth’s death, accusations of bewitchment flew, and fingers were pointed at numerous townspeople. Hysteria gripped Hartford.  This particular witch hunt would end in 1665, after seven trials, many accusations, and four executions.  Thus began the American tradition of witch hunts. Later, of course, came the infamous Salem witch trials, between February 1692 and May 1693, that would end with the executions of some 20 people.  But that is another story for another day …

witch-3As is the case with most time-honoured traditions, the witch hunt has evolved and changed, though not necessarily for the better.  We are now, in the year 2016, in the midst of yet another massive witch hunt.  Though this particular “witch” has been proven innocent of all charges more than once, there are those who still call for blood.  This particular witch hunt is more a product of the current political environment than it is of any actual crime.  The accused?  Hillary Clinton, of course.  The accusation?  That her use of a private email server during her tenure as U.S. Secretary of State was somehow criminal and that she somehow operated with the intention of committing fraud or a breech of national security.  The accusers?  The “townspeople” of the Republican Party.  The victims?  The taxpayers of the United States.

The facts of the matter:

  • When Clinton got to the Department, she opted to use her personal email account as a matter of convenience. It enabled her to reach people quickly and keep in regular touch with her family and friends more easily given her travel schedule.
  • The laws, regulations, and State Department policy in place during her tenure permitted her to use a non-government email for work. Clinton’s practices complied with laws and regulations,
  • Clinton only used her account for unclassified email. No information in Clinton’s emails was marked classified at the time she sent or received them. Classified information was handled by a separate, closed email system used by the State Department
  • Clinton used only one email account during her tenure at State.
  • Clinton provided all emails that were even potentially work-related—including emails about using a fax machine or asking for iced tea during a meeting—erring on the side of over-inclusion, as confirmed by the Department and National Archives.
  • There is no evidence there was ever a breach in security of the server.

Given the above indisputable facts, there is no “scandal”, no “email-gate”, no reason for the politicos and the citizens to be up in arms, to be chasing a “witch” with boiling oil and clubs.  So, why ….?  Because, dear friends, we are only a few months away from a general election in which we will select a new President of the United States.  And because the Republican Party has no viable candidate who can even conceivably win that election based on his own merit.  Therefore, they find it necessary to create a distraction, a diversion to make it appear that the other candidate must be disqualified.

Make no mistake, the Republican Party is not proud of their presumptive nominee.  They are even ashamed to call him their own, as evidenced by the fact that many prominent republicans are finding excuses to stay away from the upcoming nominating convention, and the party has been scurrying to try to find speakers.  So, if you have a candidate who cannot possibly win based on merit, what do you do?  You do everything you can to make the opponent look even worse, to make her appear to have thrown in her lot with witches and warlocks and even the devil himself!  It is what is known as the “last best hope”, or “grasping at straws”.  But guess who is paying a high price for these antics?  Yes, We The People are paying.  Some $30 million, by some estimates.

witch-header-3After a lengthy investigation (read costly) FBI director James Comey announced that there was absolutely no evidence of criminal intent by Ms. Clinton regarding the use of a private email server.  He stated that the FBI would recommend that no charges be filed against Ms. Clinton in regards to her use of a private email server.  Had there been even the slightest shred of evidence to support further investigation or charges being filed, Mr. Comey, a Republican, would have jumped at the opportunity.  That in itself is perhaps the best evidence that there is no scandal, was no criminal intent.  At the same time, Mr. Comey seemed unable to resist giving his opinion of Ms. Clinton by saying she was extremely careless, showed poor judgment (which she herself said long ago) and so on and so forth, ad nauseam. It is that opinion, clearly done with purpose and ‘malice aforethought’, that has prompted Republicans far and wide to call for additional investigations, again at taxpayer expense.  The results of any such investigations will be the same as the FBI investigation, will not result in charges against Ms. Clinton, and will be nothing more than GOP games to try to keep the non-scandal alive and in the public eye until November 8th.  There is no doubt that, were it not an election year, or were Hillary Clinton not running for president, this matter would have already faded into oblivion.  Thus it is nothing more, nothing less, than a witch hunt.

As a result of the FBI investigation, Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced that the AG’s office will not file charges against Clinton, which subsequently led to a feeding frenzy among the GOP.  This morning, Republican lawmakers grilled the Attorney General at great length, asking for details, asking endless and repetitious questions.  To her credit, Ms. Lynch stood firm in her refusal to provide details, stating that it would be inappropriate for her to disclose information about confidential briefings, as is her right and also her responsibility.

gowdy-nothingIt is all over.  There can be further investigations, however there will be no new and shocking results.  The fact is that there is no scandal, there was neither criminal intent nor negligence, and it is a trumped-up (pun fully intended) witch hunt intended to distract the American voting public.  Don’t fall for it, folks.

I leave you with one final thought.  The odds are slim-to-none, but what if the Republicans were to actually succeed in getting the Department of Justice to file charges against Clinton?  And what if those charges rendered her to be disqualified from the race for president?  What would happen?  What would happen, my friends, is that Bernie Sanders would in all likelihood become the Democratic nominee, and Bernie Sanders would win against Donald Trump by a landslide!  I find it quite humorous to think about … in all this, I doubt that the Republicans actually want Clinton disqualified, I think they merely want to keep this non-scandal alive and well until after election day!
