This One Really DOES Matter — Just Ask Annie!

Tomorrow is ELECTION DAY here in the U.S.  No, this isn’t a presidential election year, not even a mid-term election year, though there are a couple of congressional seats on the ballot.  But in many states it’s an important election nonetheless.  Voters tend to be a bit lax about these off-year elections, thinking they don’t really matter, but this one really does matter.  Two major issues are on the ballots in several states this year:  democracy, and women’s rights.

Our friend Annie over at annieasksyou has been having WordPress troubles lately.  I well remember how from about mid-July through mid-August I went through similar troubles and some days fewer than half my normal readers even saw my posts, so I can certainly empathise with Annie!  Her most recent post recaps some of the things on the ballots in a variety of states tomorrow – and also has a bonus of a really fun animal video!  I’m sharing her message this afternoon, for I feel it is imperative that we all understand the importance of this year’s election and that we all do our part to protect and preserve the democratic foundations that are teetering on the precipice today.

Thank you, Annie, for all that you do and for allowing me to share your work!

Here is a brief snippet from Annie’s post … then please go check out the entire post titled We Ignore Animals’ Cognition at Our Peril…plus a civics reminder/plea:

Speaking of cognition, if you haven’t voted yet, don’t forget that Tuesday, November 7, is election day. In our house, we’ve been writing postcards and sending modest donations hither and thither.

I’m appealing to all of you to support the candidates whose words and actions demonstrate they want to preserve and extend democracy. I don’t hide my political preference, but from what I hear and read, millions of Independents, Never Trumpers and former Republicans–as well as many Republicans trying to reclaim their party from the far right–recognize that it’s essential in our two-party system to support the Democrats at this critical time in our national life.

Once again, please click the above link to see the cute animal video and to read the rest of the important information about tomorrow’s election!

A Few Friday ‘Toons …

I am trying to calm down before I write about yesterday’s “political earthquake”, as CNN refers to it, in Tennessee.  I will have a post about that this afternoon, unless something even more devastating to our nation happens before then, which is unimaginable.  In the meantime, since I spent about two hours working on taxes, I am pretty much brain-dead, so I thought I’d give you the political cartoons I’ve been collecting over the past few days!

Filosofa Stomps Her Feet

STAY BACK!!!!  Filosofa is in a horrid mood … approach at risk of life and limb!!!!

I am in a horrid mood tonight.  I have expressed hatred toward my body, the country in which I live, and a number of politicos here.  Let me share just a few of the red-hot thoughts rambling through my mind tonight as I wish I were anywhere else but here …

Israeli arrogance

My father was a Jew.  My paternal grandparents narrowly escaped Hitler’s reach, and my great aunt Margaret and great uncle Rip (Rinehart) spent more than two years in Hitler’s death camps.  This was the legacy with which I grew up in a few short years after the Holocaust.  That said, I am not a fan of the Israeli land grab nor of Benjamin Netanyahu and his cruel brand of leadership.  After all this time, I am more empathetic to the Palestinians for what has been done to them than to the Israelis.  The Holocaust ended 76 years ago.  The Jews can only expect to play on the sympathies of the world for so long, and today they have become the oppressor, rather than the oppressed.

Yes, both sides share fault, but Israel is greedy and arrogant and … the Palestinians are being/have been driven from their homeland.  Netanyahu deserves a life behind bars while other, less greedy, more functional minds attempt to sort this out.

Male/evangelical arrogance

I am a woman.  As such, there are some things that I consider to be nobody’s business but my own.  One of those things is my body.  If I were pregnant (never mind that, at age 70, it would be something for the record books) and could not afford in one way or another to raise a child, it is MY business, not Ted Cruz’ or Franklin Graham’s or anybody else’s!  If I decide to have an abortion, it is entirely MY business.  Unless, of course, you plan to take my child, raise it as your own, provide for its every need, including a college education?  Yeah, that’s what I thought.  It’s a funny thing that those who call themselves “Pro-life” actually don’t give a royal fig about a child’s life once it is born, once their will is forced upon a woman.  At that point, when asked to contribute to that child’s welfare, the blonde airhead “pro-lifer” backs up a few steps, holding her hands out, saying, “Oh no … no no no … this isn’t my problem!”

Evangelicals and the rest can take their ‘right to life’ platform and stick it where the sun doesn’t shine!  The Supreme Court has agreed to weigh in on the case of a Mississippi law that, going against the ruling of Roe v Wade, seeks to ban most all abortions.  I realize that the people of Mississippi are not highly educated nor sophisticated, but damn them … they are NOT going to dictate to every woman in this nation!  None of the Justices on the Supreme Court have any idea what it is like to be a single working mom, struggling to raise your children with no damn help!  Listen to Elvis’ “In the Ghetto” sometime … think about those lyrics, so very real for so many of us!

Facebook ‘standards’

A few days ago, Facebook ‘chastised’ me for a comment I left on a post about the ignoble former guy.  They removed my comment several hours after I had posted it and after it had received a number of ‘likes’.  Facebook sent me no less than two messages explaining that my comment violated their ‘community standards’ and after a number of people had given a thumbs-up to my comment.  Frankly, I don’t give a royal shit, for I’ve been considering dumping Facebook for some time now.  But, I admit it galls me a bit that I am chastised for something that is far more mellow than other comments that have been allowed.

Then yesterday, I came across the daily Claytoonz cartoon/editorial, and noticed a note at the end of his post that said …

“I am appealing, but this cartoon has already been removed by Facebook and my account has been suspended for 24 hours. I’ll update if there is a change to that.”

This is the ‘toon that got him suspended …

Being a bit of a mischief maker, and not giving a royal fig if Facebook bans me for life, I copied the ‘toon to my own Facebook page to see how long it would take them to either chastise, or worse yet, ban me.  Twelve hours later, the ‘toon is still on my FB page and I’ve not yet received one of their nasty little notes.  Hmmmm … maybe I’ll have to try harder?

Nite nite …

I am going to bed now, hoping to sleep off this horrible mood that has taken over my psyche, that has made me want to yell at everyone, including my own self.  Buenas noches, amigos.

One Out Of Three …

The Supreme Court was busy yesterday morning.  They made one good decision and two horrible ones.  Let’s start with the good …

On the upside, the Court struck down Louisiana’s restrictive anti-abortion law.  Chief Justice John Roberts voted with the Court’s liberal justices … not because he was against the law or pro women’s rights, but simply because four years ago, the Court struck down a similar law in Texas, thereby setting the precedent.  I will never understand why men think they know anything about this topic, or why they think they have a right to tell us what we can or must do with our own bodies.  Watch them scream and yell if you suggest that women should decide whether men can have a vasectomy, or those little blue pills they’re so fond of.

Anti-abortion groups went ballistic, saying it will give them more motivation than ever to turn out at the polls in November.  Once again, folks, we have people in this country who are so narrow-minded that they will return a madman to the Oval Office for another four years, simply to deny women the same rights that men have to make our own decisions regarding our own bodies.  And here I thought we were living in the 21st century.

At any rate, thumbs up to the five on the Court who voted right on this one.

In another ruling, the Court gave the federal government the right to carry out executions.  Funny, isn’t it, that people like Justices Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Alito and Thomas are so horrified at the thought of a woman having the right to control her own body, but they are ready, willing and perfectly happy to say it’s okay to murder federal prisoners … people who are actually already people.

Now, the biggest problem I have with the death penalty is that more than a few times, a prisoner on death row has been found to be innocent of the crime for which he is serving time.  The state releases him, pays him a bit of restitution, and while his life has been shattered, he still has a chance to put it back together.  If he had been executed … what???  Does the government say, “Oops … sorry ‘bout that!”?  Executing a person is pretty darn final.

The second problem I have with the death penalty is that it is inhumane.  Think of how many executions were botched a few years ago and people died after sometimes hours of intense pain.  Hell, the guillotine was kinder!  Proponents of the death penalty say execution by lethal injection is painless and humane, but we’ve seen that it isn’t.  And by the way … the people who seem most gung-ho for executing criminals are Christians … what happened to that tenet that says it’s not up to humans to decide life and death?

And I’ve saved the best (worst) for last.  The justices ruled that the president has unfettered discretion to fire the head of the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB). This should raise your hackles, if you remember the reason the CFPB was created back in 2010.  It was in response to the financial crisis of 2007-2008 caused by reckless speculation, loose credit, and too much debt in asset markets, namely, the housing market.  The purpose of the CFPB was to provide a single point of accountability for enforcing federal consumer financial laws and protecting consumers in the financial marketplace.  It was to promote fairness and transparency for mortgages, credit cards, and other consumer financial products and services and ensure that the financial crisis of 2007-2008 would not be repeated.

Until today’s Supreme Court ruling, the CFPB was an independent agency, not answerable to the president.  In order to ensure the CFPB’s independence, the law creating the agency called for it to be headed by a single director, confirmed by the Senate, who would serve a five-year term and who could only be fired for malfeasance, inefficiency or neglect of duty.  Today, Chief Justice John Roberts sided with the conservative wing of the Court, saying that “the structure of the CFPB violates the separation of powers.”

Bullshit.

The structure was so determined in order to ensure the independence and integrity of the agency.  Think about all the people Donald Trump has fired since the Senate refused to convict him of the crimes he had committed back in February.  He has fired most everyone who was tasked with overseeing his office, with ensuring that he acted properly and in the interest of the nation and its people.  Now, he’s been given another he can fire … the Director of a very important regulatory agency.  It is only a matter of time before Kathy Kraninger, the current Director, is given her walking papers, and someone totally unqualified for the agency position will be put in place to undermine the good work that has been done for the past ten years.

Way to go, John Roberts.  Is there anything else you’d like to give Trump?  Perhaps the authority to rewrite Article II of the U.S. Constitution to say that he can do anything he likes, as he told a group of young people he could do?  Or, perhaps you’d like to simply declare that there will be no more elections in the U.S.?

Independence and integrity in our Supreme Court?  I think not.  The only good decision, in my book, was the abortion decision and it wasn’t done for the right reason, not because John Roberts believes that women have rights, but simply to maintain a precedent.  Apart from that decision, the Court handed Trump presents wrapped in gift paper with pretty bows.  Bah Humbug.
